What is DownloaderPlus?
DownloaderPlus is presented as a legitimate application allowing users to manage all of their downloads – “Sporting a user-friendly interface, Downloader Plus will let you completely manage all your downloads from one window.“. On initial inspection, DownloaderPlus actually seems like an appropriate application. However, users should be informed that it is actually considered as a potentially unwanted adware-type application, that infiltrates the system without users’ permission. On top of that, DownloaderPlus tracks users’ Internet browsing activity and displays intrusive online advertisements.
This app gathers Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.), and other similar browsing-related data. Once collected, every bit of information is shared with third parties. Thus, users should know that some of that information might be personally identifiable, which means that it can be misused to generate earnings. Presence of an information tracking application can eventually lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. In addition, DownloaderPlus employs a virtual layer to display pop-up, banner, coupon and other similar ads. Virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any of users’ visited sites, hence, none of the displayed ads originate from users’ visited web pages. By concealing the underlying content, advertisements significantly diminish users’ Internet browsing quality. Not even mentioning that some of those ads redirect to malicious sites, which means that even an accidental click on these ads may lead to high-risk adware or malware infection. We highly recommend you to consider uninstalling DownloaderPlus adware.
There are hundreds of potentially unwanted programs that share similarities with DownloaderPlus adware. For instance, MusicOptimizerLab, Get-a-Clip, and ScrollUp also offer useful features. Yet neither DownloaderPlus, nor any of those apps actually provide the promised functionality. Adware-type programs are developed to generate income for the developers, thus, they give no real value for users. Instead, they track personally identifiable information (which is later sold for third party companies), as well as deliver intrusive online advertisements (using ‘Pay Per Click (PPC)’ advertising model).
How did DownloaderPlus install on my computer?
The developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called ‘bundling’ (undercover installation of third party apps along with the users’ chosen software) as one of the main distribution ways. For this reason, DownloaderPlus often infiltrates the system without asking for users’ permission. Many users do not know that rogue applications are most likely to be hidden within ‘Custom/Advanced’ settings. Therefore, they recklessly rush the download and installation processes without any hesitation. Users who act so often end up unwillingly installing applications similar to DownloaderPlus.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of adware-type applications similar to DownloaderPlus can be prevented by closely analyzing every single step of the download and installation processes. Users must be very attentive and always select either ‘Custom’ or ‘Advanced’ download/installation settings, otherwise potentially unwanted programs, that must be opted-out, will remain hidden and they will not be able to cancel them.
